Nhiễm virus dại, rối loạn đông máu, hay nhiễm ấu trùng sán... là căn gây bệnh đáng sợ đe dọa người thường xuyên ăn thịt chó. Thời gian gần đây, một số bệnh viện đã tiếp nhận nhiều bệnh nhân đến cấp cứu vì nhiễm độc do ăn thịt chó. Mới nhất là trường hợp nam bệnh nhân cấp cứu tại Viện Huyết học - Truyền máu Trung ương trong tình trạng chảy máu nhiều bộ phận không thể cầm. Bệnh nhân bị bệnh rối loạn đông máu nhưng lại không có tiền sử bệnh này. Tuy nhiên, trước đó, người này đã ăn thịt chó. Các bác sĩ cho rằng, con chó mà bệnh nhân ăn có thể đã ăn phải chuột chết vì bả, hoặc con chó mà bệnh nhân ăn bị trúng bả chó. Chính chất chống đông trong bả chó, bả chuột là nguyên nhân gián tiếp làm bệnh nhân bị ngộ độc, máu chảy không cầm được. Ngoài các bệnh phát sinh từ nhiễm bả độc, đối với người thường xuyên ăn thịt chó còn có thể gặp những chứng bệnh nguy hiểm khác. Thịt chó là thực phẩm rất giàu chất đạm nhưng có tính nhiệt.
